First episodes of every season on any series are always demanding to set up, but Miller says he and Littlefield were hoping Moss would put herself up to take on the task. "I think Warren and I had been waiting for her to bring it up because that's what you need, is the desire," Miller says about how she came to direct the premiere. "She certainly had the skills and certainly had the experience. But, if she didn't want to, I wasn't gonna push her. She's a grown woman. But we were both very eager to say yes when she brought it up and were happy she was also eager to do it."

There isn't much tension between characters in The Handmaid's Tale Season 5. June turns herself into the police in Canada in Season 5, Episode 1, "Morning," but since many on the outside wanted to see Fred Waterford dead and his death wasn't a matter for their government, she doesn't face any consequences. Serena learns about Fred's death and discovers his body in sequences that take too long and don't add much suspense to the narrative. She returns to Gilead in Season 5, Episode 2 "Ballet" only to be sent back to Toronto and make June aware that she has access to Hannah in another messy parenthood story. While the action ramps up in later episodes, the slow start has brought down the entire season.

With the exception of Season 5, Episode 5, "Fairytale," there haven't been any cliffhangers to keep the audience coming back. Most of the episodes end on a light-hearted note, and while it's good for the main characters to not have to go through as much trauma as they did before, viewers need those nail-biting cliffhangers to maintain their interest in the show. "Fairytale" had June and Luke being captured at the border -- but that only served to highlight the overall lack of surprises in Season 5. The Handmaid's Tale has lost some of its excitement that is now found in other Hulu series.

"The Handmaid's Tale" is back for season five with an evolving plot line that coincides with a fresh approach to costume design. Since its 2017 debut, the Hulu drama series has enlisted three different lead costume designers: Ane Crabtree, who created the original Gilead look with its red caped dresses and white bonnet hats; Natalie Bronfman, who took the reins starting with season three; and, most recently, Leslie Kavanagh, who joined in season five.
"I made a conscious decision that June would never willingly wear red again — a design choice that was embraced by Elisabeth Moss."
Though Kavanagh has never worked with Crabtree, she tells POPSUGAR she'll still draw inspiration from her predecessor's vision and build on it as each season progresses. One way she is adding to Crabtree's sartorial legacy is by expanding the range of textures, patterns, and colors to coincide with June (played by Elisabeth Moss) embracing "freedom" in Canada. "In season five, I continued to expand on the Gilead aesthetic while also developing a clear visual contrast for the cast and characters in Toronto," Kavanagh explains to POPSUGAR.
One standout moment is the funeral scene carried out in episode two, for which there were over 500 background actors to dress. Kavanagh was tasked with dreaming up a look for Serena that both highlighted her pregnancy and spoke to her character transition, and her team created a custom wardrobe that delivered.
Ahead, both Bronfman and Kavanagh break down the most memorable costume adaptations through season five.
— Additional reporting by Kara Kia

Related:

Alexis Bledel Was Written Off "The Handmaid's Tale" in Episode 1 of Season 5 — Here's What Happened

https:///files/thumbor/7ciMHRApbhLfnklo1upd_IsvuT0/fit-in/1024x1024/filters:format_auto-!!-:strip_icc-!!-/2020/07/22/867/n/1922564/netimg3Z37zd/i/Bronfman-historical-approach-to-costuming-in-beginning-episodes.jpg
https:///files/thumbor/ZshMwjf4juYFb-Jo1HD3Pjkh_ME/fit-in/2048xorig/filters:format_auto-!!-:strip_icc-!!-/2020/07/22/867/n/1922564/netimg3Z37zd/i/Bronfman-historical-approach-to-costuming-in-beginning-episodes.jpg

Bronfman's historical approach to costuming in the beginning episodes is seen heavily in the prim-and-proper postwar silhouettes of "The Handmaid's Tale."

https:///fashion/photo-gallery/47636035/image/47636044/Bronfman-historical-approach-to-costuming-in-beginning-episodes
https:///fashion/the-handmaids-tale-costume-designer-interview-47636035
Bronfman's historical approach to costuming in the beginning episodes is seen heavily in the prim-and-proper postwar silhouettes of "The Handmaid's Tale.\
https:///files/thumbor/rTkbpII6EBs-2noGsyPjs_hba5U/fit-in/1024x1024/filters:format_auto-!!-:strip_icc-!!-/2020/07/22/867/n/1922564/netimg1N15V9/i/Handmaids-Capelets.jpg
https:///files/thumbor/90rUSfQ_aGdSyOcEyd4nyPgP_eQ/fit-in/2048xorig/filters:format_auto-!!-:strip_icc-!!-/2020/07/22/867/n/1922564/netimg1N15V9/i/Handmaids-Capelets.jpg
The Handmaids' Capelets
"With June, when the government was doing the propaganda, the handmaids wore little capelets that covered up the neckline, so that became a new costume piece," Bronfman tells POPSUGAR.

https:///files/thumbor/UFblz0fCI2nuOrCBEEzvVOAFBLY/fit-in/1024x1024/filters:format_auto-!!-:strip_icc-!!-/2020/07/22/867/n/1922564/netimgzLmL2c/i/Gilead-Veils.jpg
https:///files/thumbor/upmM1kf7HG1KwkSR28LVroAnVOI/fit-in/2048xorig/filters:format_auto-!!-:strip_icc-!!-/2020/07/22/867/n/1922564/netimgzLmL2c/i/Gilead-Veils.jpg
The Gilead Veils
The most striking expression of Washington's austerity is seen in the veils, introduced in season three of the show.
